Yesterday we watched Equilibrium, a science fiction action movie starring Christian Bale.
In an indeterminate future human emotion has been banned because it is believed to be the root cause of war and violence. All citizens are therefore required to take regular injections of an emotion suppressing drug: the Prozium. At the pinnacle of law enforcements are the Grammaton Clerics - among them John Preston (Bale) - who regularly raid the region outside the city where they locate and destroy emotionally stimulating materials and execute the people using them. One day John Preston is unable to take his daily vial of drug and begins to experience emotions himself.
One of the most beautiful scenes in the movie - along with the sunrise scene - is when he listens to music for the first time. Imagine having been raised in a world without emotion, feelings and art and all of a sudden you hear Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. How would you react?
Without music, life would be a mistake.
Friedrich Nietzsche*
* Well, he also said "I would only believe in a God who knew how to dance" and "I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time". ¨Food for the next articles?
